ChevronTexaco, predictably, claims its being framed. Rather, it seems another Latin American government is finding more assertiveness against Yanqui business imperialism.
Beyond that, a lawyer for Ecuador says the government isn’t involved in any civil tort litigation against Chevron, only the fraud charges against two Chevron lawyers for allegedly trying to perpetrate an environmental cover-up.
The civil case stems from pre-merger Texaco's drilling activity in the Ecuadorean portion of the Amazon.
A skeptical leftist's, or post-capitalist's, or eco-socialist's blog, including skepticism about leftism (and related things under other labels), but even more about other issues of politics. Free of duopoly and minor party ties. Also, a skeptical look at Gnu Atheism, religion, social sciences, more.
Note: Labels can help describe people but should never be used to pin them to an anthill.

Pics from DNC up on my photos website
Along with climbing the highest point in Colorado, some Canyonlands astrophotography, Arches’ Delicate Arch at sunset, and more.
Technically, I flew back out of Denver the day before the convention started, and besides, people could barely get close enough to the Pepsi Center to sniff the air.
Besides that, I wanted to go to the protest site at Cuernavaca Park.

Ike update — stay home; eight dead in U.S.
Police in Houston sububs such as Seabrook are still barricaded away from going back home. Which is probably a good thing, given the amount of standing water still there, and the lack of electricity.
Here’s the rest of latest news of the Ike aftermath :
• Eight confirmed dead so far — five in Texas and three of those in Galveston. Given that 40 percent of Galveston residents willfully disregarded (“ignored” is way too polite, both legally and morally) a mandatory evacuation order, expect that number to go up.
• Houston has imposed a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew for the entire Monday-Friday workweek. I’m sure many suburbs that are “open” are looking at similar.
• Galveston’s causeway to the mainland has been damaged, which could further hamper rescue efforts, and will certainly hamper the return of residents when that is allowed.

‘I’m Karl Rove and I approve this message’
After Turd Blossom admitted earlier today that John McCain ads had gone “beyond the 100 percent truth test ,” if Obama doesn’t hit this HARD, and with more than a campaign statement, then he is weak.
Instead:
Run a whole damn series of ads about McCain’s lying, with the kicker at the end of each one.
Find a Rove look-alike, and have him say: “I’m Karl Rove, and I ran what had been the sleaziest campaigns ever, to get George W. Bush elected. And I approve this message.”
Time after time. About McCain’s lies about what he has done, that he hasn’t. About McCain’s lies about Palin. About McCain’s lies about Obama.
Run it.
Again and again.
But not necessarily nationally all the time. This is a HUGE ad campaign for swing-state target markets.
This can’t be run enough to be run into the ground.

Mayor Hatchetwoman wants to be Veep
I’ve spent more than a decade as a community newspaper editor, including one stint at a town only about half the size of Wasilla, Alaska.
And I can say with a high degree of assurance that most small-town mayors do not run their offices with Sarah Palin’s level of personal vindictiveness.
Nor does any elected official as high up as a governor, or any appointed staffer this side of Karl Rove, deliberately use personal e-mails for government business in a deliberate attempt to avoid open records laws.
Here’s your pull quote, speaking of her run for governor:
Oh, and doesn’t calling your political opponents “haters” make you sound like you’re a 16-year-old stoned out on one too many teen movies?

“She was fresh, and she was tomorrow,” said Michael Carey, a former editorial page editor for The Anchorage Daily News. “She just floated along like Mary Poppins.”(Emphasis added.)

Get your Green groove on tonight
Greta Bruner, CSPAN interviewer, has confirmed that C-SPAN will be airing its Cynthia McKinney interview on "Road to the White House" in its usual time slot tonight at both 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. Eastern time. Included will be footage of the Ron Paul event where he supports third-party candidates for president.
In other GP news, it has qualified for November ballot access in Ohio and Virginia. (You will have to write in McKinney and lower-level candidates here in Texas.)
