First, I disagree with some of the critics cited in this story – a green building is a green building, period, no matter who owns it, what they sell there and whether the parking lot is full or not. What, you want stores with fewer customers?
At the same time, these critics miss the boat by focusing on environmental issues only, rather than saying something like:
How do we use this as leverage to work on getting Wal-Mart to be more labor friendly?
A skeptical leftist's, or post-capitalist's, or eco-socialist's blog, including skepticism about leftism (and related things under other labels), but even more about other issues of politics. Free of duopoly and minor party ties. Also, a skeptical look at Gnu Atheism, religion, social sciences, more.
Note: Labels can help describe people but should never be used to pin them to an anthill.

You CAN ‘have it your way’ – at McDonald’s
McDonald’s is trumping Burger King on menu options, not to mention restaurant design.
Just one problem. You have to go to Europe to enjoy this.
On the food side, it’s pasta in Italy, and (like Jack in the Box here), ciabatta-based sandwiches in France.
On the service and design side? Try built-in table iPods in France, and table service at some Italian Mickey Ds.

Starbucks need not fear Mickey D
McDonald’s highly-touted premium coffees and coffee drinks are about as financially tasty as old Folger’s run through a percolator.
And that’s not the half of it. Read the full story for more.
A chart of the six major areas where the company is selling the drinks shows that sales in most markets peaked about three weeks after the drinks launched, then declined in the following weeks, in some cases sharply, according to company documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. In Kansas City, Mo., for instance, the average number of specialty coffee drinks sold per restaurant peaked in early December at 359. As of the last week in June, that average had fallen to 217.

Goodbye Dollar Menu?
McDonald’s franchisees would like to utter that magic phrase, but big Mayor McCheeses at HQ are instead pushing it further.
Franchisees’ complaint? Not enough profit margin in the dollar items.
A few stores, in fact, have stopped offering it.
And, since McDonald’s continues to be the industry leader, despite a few stumbles in recent years, you know that Wendy’s, Burger King and others are taking similar looks at their menus.
