Ike update — stay home; eight dead in U.S.

Police in Houston sububs such as Seabrook are still barricaded away from going back home. Which is probably a good thing, given the amount of standing water still there, and the lack of electricity.

Here’s the rest of latest news of the Ike aftermath :
• Eight confirmed dead so far — five in Texas and three of those in Galveston. Given that 40 percent of Galveston residents willfully disregarded (“ignored” is way too polite, both legally and morally) a mandatory evacuation order, expect that number to go up.

• Houston has imposed a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew for the entire Monday-Friday workweek. I’m sure many suburbs that are “open” are looking at similar.

• Galveston’s causeway to the mainland has been damaged, which could further hamper rescue efforts, and will certainly hamper the return of residents when that is allowed.
