A skeptical leftist's, or post-capitalist's, or eco-socialist's blog, including skepticism about leftism (and related things under other labels), but even more about other issues of politics. Free of duopoly and minor party ties. Also, a skeptical look at Gnu Atheism, religion, social sciences, more.
Note: Labels can help describe people but should never be used to pin them to an anthill.

I'm missing Glenn Beck on the Huntsville shooting
Did you notice it happened at the Shelby Center, surely named after Alabama's "Senator Hold"? And, Prof. Bishop was educated at that bastion of socialism, Harvard?
The only possible conclusion is that guns are dangerous only when in the hands of socialists, and that Prof. Bishop was an obvious part of the socialist agenda.
I hear Glenn Beck warming up his vocal chords as we speak.

Black Swans author Nassim Nicholas Taleb a real nutbar
British Tory Party head David Cameron is enough a nutbar to suggest the UK could default on its national debt, but the Guardian shows he has nothing on Taleb. Economic crashes can be good? Even Schumpeter wasn’t that blunt. Oh, he’s a global warming denialist, too.

When tea partiers attack
More and more, Democratic Congressmen are getting wary about town hall events because of the unruliness of tea-partier type constituents.
That said, lest GOP folks like Republican Congressional Campaign Committee Chariman Pete Sessions get too smug, “birthers” may become more a problem at some of their town halls.

National Review to ‘birthers’ – STFU
I doubt even this will put an end to the “Obama birther” tin-foil hattery, but National Review nails all the main points about Barack Obama being born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

NBC science veteran on Apollo 11
Not every TV science story producer gets Neil Armstrong to show up at a party for 50 years of work, so Jay Barbree is well worth a read, including for a quick debunking of the “faked landing” tin-foil hatters major talking points.
The Dallas Voice also has coverage of the most recent Fort Worth City Council meeting.

‘Traitor’ Maj. Cook has ‘Obama birther’ suit dismissed
Oh, and next time you volunteer for active duty, be sincere about it. Is deliberately deceiving your superior officers a court-martial offense?
And, will the Georgia Bar Association get the gonads to slap his attorney, Orly Taitz, (pictured, with Cook) with a barratry citation?

NASA lost moon video original
Fortunately, Hollywood came to the rescue, and even made it look better than original.
It was called “Capricorn 21.”
C’mon, Buzz Aldrin, don’t punch me!

‘Traitor’ reservist major dodges A-stan – shyster angle
There’s much more coming out on the case of U.S. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook and his “Obama is not an American” refusal to deploy to Afghanistan when first called up.
Representing him in his quasi-treasonous stance is birth-certificate chasing lawyer Orly Taitz, who has done this before.
Military blog Mudville Gazette has more, including an earlier class-action suit by Taitz that included Cook.
And, it appeared Cook volunteered for call-up to be a claim-tester.
Lt. Col. Maria Quon, U.S. Army Public Affairs Officer, said a reservist who volunteers for active duty can request recension of orders up to the day of deployment.
So, he’s not just a traitor, he’s one of those conservative lawyer-haters, except when it’s their own lawyer who’s doing the goring.
I think his two weeks of active training ought to be sending him down to McMurdo in Antarctic winter or something.

Conserrvative treason: Soldier won’t deploy, sez Obama not US citizen
And, this isn’t some redneck private, it’s an officer with a sworn oath. U.S. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook says he should not have to go to Afghanistan because President Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen.
Is it “treason,” beyond a figurative sense, or just “desertion”? Well, it’s an overt act, and, supporting a rumor that arguably could give aid and comfort to the enemy.
I have the perfect solution. Let Dick Cheney assassinate him!
There’s more:
It sounds like Cook, a called-up reservist, just doesn’t want to deploy.
Tough shit.
Is there a reservist unit in The Fighting 101st Keyboarders?

There’s more:
Cook further states he “would be acting in violation of international law by engaging in military actions outside the United States under this President’s command. ... simultaneously subjecting himself to possible prosecution as a war criminal by the faithful execution of these duties.”

Somebody get Marty Peretz a rabies shot
The publisher of The New Republic is the latest winger to claim left-liberals want to exclude Christians from government. His “proof”? Objections to Obama’s naming Francis Collins to head NIH. The worry is not about Collins as a Christian. It’s that, among other things, Collins might use his particular evangelical beliefs, since he is very open about his religion, to influence genetic research decisions, federal funding for genetic research, etc. We saw exactly that happen under President Bush’s bioethics council, with stem-cell research.
The fact that, per Wiki, Collins believes in a “gOd of the gaps,” with gOd itself above gap-investigation, makes this problematic. Essentially, Collins’ metaphysical beliefs are mush, pure mush. And, if that makes his science soft, that’s problematic. What if he, without religious beliefs, but with the same mushy thought, signs off on spending more money on alt-medicine?

Pete Sessions has a genuine, certified nutbar on his staff
For the past couple of days, a friend of mine said her office has been getting faxes from someone, with the fax transmission code saying “Pete Sessions” at the top. I saw a copy of one, saw the fax number, and went to Sessions’ website.
Sure enough, it matches the 972-392-0505 fax number for his Dallas office.
The faxer is in full blown Free Republic mode, tin hats and all. He/she literally talks about “the satellites spying on me.”
If any of y’all know Will Pryor, pass it on.
