De Sade — Insane, or marginized genius?

Or somewhere in between?

The Marquis de Sade, before we get to that question of the header, was not the Larry Flynt of 200-plus years ago. Rather, through his graphically, violently sexual writings, he was, it seems, challenging Enlightenment society in general, and late-Enlightenment France of the philosophes in general.

The Baffler, a place I love visiting, has a very interesting take on him.

That said, the piece is interesting, but, but I disagree with some of its conclusions. This is the most iffy Baffler piece in some ways that I've read in some time. The main thing I like about it is that it strips away much of the myth surrounding the Marquis de Sade. He wasn't promoting free love, he was promoting violent grotesqueries to challenge claims of how enlightened modern homo sapiens of his day allegedly was.

The main thing I don't like is:
It’s impossible to know whether Sade—who was almost certainly mentally ill for much of his life, if not for all of it—deliberately sabotaged the Enlightenment by ruthlessly parodying it or really held the philosophical and political convictions his characters voice ad nauseam.
The "impossible to know" may be somewhat overstated; I lean toward thinking he really had such convictions. That said, it's not tremendously overstated.

What is thrown out baldly, without evidence, is the claim that he was "almost certainly mentally ill for much of his life, if not for all of it." Isn't that a way of marginalizing what he said, and not trying to wrestle further with that "impossible to know"? After all, people have no problem pointing at Nietzsche as insane, even well before the period when he actually did go insane, as a way of dismissing him.

And, I suspect that if ancient Alexandria, in Hellenistic times, had had both insane asylums and Christians, insanity charges would have been hurled against Diogenes, the founder of Cynicism. That said, he's not an exact parallel.

Other than demythologizing him, the piece is good in demythologizing Nietzsche's claim to have been his later interpreter, and Ayn Rand's claim to have been the later interpreter of both of them. Those claims are made more by their followers than by the two themselves, actually, but they're out there to this day.

Anyway, it should be clear I think de Sade was neither half of the header. He was insightful about the problems with rationalism in general, including its assumptions about the potential, or actual, rationality of human nature — assumptions that too often go unchallenged today.

That said, was he also a tortured soul in some ways? Yes. Was he mentally ill most of his life? Probably not, unless forensic psychology can make a good definition of him as a sociopath. He may have been depressed much of his life, but I don't think Hussein Ibish meant that by "mentally ill for much of his life, if not for all of it."

That said, was he as great as Diogenes? No. Diogenes challenged human social structures more deeply, yet with much less verbal violence, than de Sade, and in a much broader range of portions of society.

Porn with plots?

Yep, that’s another thing ruined by the Internet — pornography with plot lines. Who knew?
“On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”

But “actresses” like Savanna Sampson want movies with what, seven minute stretches to actually squeeze in dialogue.

Girls Gone Mild

Yes, the "adult entertainment industry" reportedly is showing signs, of, er, "softening" in its The L.A. Dodgers' skipper and former New York Yankees field general is bottom-line fiscal performance in the current economic downturn.

Beyond the recession, Internet piracy and the continued growth of "amateur" pornography are leaving LA's San Fernando Valley badly in need of some economic Viagra.

Phil Gramm down with porn

Or, I should say, “down low” with porn, right?

Via TPM, at The Nation Max Blumenthal has an expose about Gramm’s porn-bankrolling past.

Thank doorknob his head-swelling ego didn’t lead him to think about actually taking a part in a couple of his bottom-dwelling soft porn flicks, or we would all be tearing our eyes out at a YouTube vid.

Oh, the story even has a photo of the cover of the DVD version. Somebody re-released a cheesy 1970s soft-core B movie (B movie within soft-core porn of that era) on DVD?

Internet TV in cars – doorknob help us

And you thought cell phones were a sure-fire prescription for bad driving and accidents? That will be nothing compared to this.

And you know Internet porn is going to lead the hit parade.

Friday scatblogging — pornworld edition

Let’s just jump right to the facts:

Next month, Ira Isaacs, a 57-year-old Los Angeles–based video director, will sit center stage at what may be the most extreme obscenity trial in U.S. history.

There's no question the titles are extreme: Laurie’s Toilet Show, Mako’s First Time Scat, Gang Bang Horse (Pony Sex Game), and Hollywood Scat Amateurs No. 7 — the last of which Isaacs directed himself — feature coprophagy and bestiality.

So, is this “art,” or even if we aren’t that charitable…

Meanwhile, that’s not just a head, that’s art that Radar has to lead off the story. (If you don’t believe it’s art, read the artist’s name that’s part of the photo URL.)

(If you don’t believe it’s art, read the artist’s name that’s part of the photo URL.)

But, the bottom line is …

Is it free speech? (Isaac’s videos, that is.)

Hell, yes.

The government dropped two counts that Isaacs didn’t properly document the age of people in the films. So, it’s just over what is “obscene.”

Frankly, the whole “(no) redeeming social value” criterion is obsolete from where I sit.

First, what social group or subgroup are we talking about? Can Isaacs claim that a jury of his peers should consist of likeminded hardcore porn producers?

Without agreeing that what Isaacs produces is “art,” I don’t doubt that what he produces makes money, enough money to show there’s a fair-sized social group getting some sort of “redeeming” value from it:
There was a guy who shit in a can and sold it for the price of gold. [In 1961, Italian conceptual artist Piero Manzoni canned his feces in 90 tins and sold them for the price of their weight in gold.]

About when he got busted:
There’s FBI all over the place. But I’ll tell you, they were very, very pleasant people. They were really nice. Those guys would rather be fighting terrorism than being the sex police. The FBI guy was as curious as you are. He asked me, “Off the record,” he asked me, “How do you convince girls to do this kind of stuff?” I said, “I do it very well.”

I am laughing my head off at some Mormon FBI agent from BYU or University of Utah (the FBI explicitly recruits both campuses) taking notes, and a “Hmmm” moment hitting the back of the frontal lobes of this straitlaced Mormon brain.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors know they don’t have much of a case, I guess:
They offer me a plea deal. I met with them at the beginning of March [2007]. They say, “Take a year and half.” I said no. Then they call me up, and they say four months in prison and four months house arrest. And I turned that down.

Shit, they’re begging, just to get a conviction for some BushCo U.S. Attorney to mail back to D.C. and Alberto Gonzales (at that time).

And, Isaacs has irony:
The only thing I regret is not putting Bach in the background.

I agree that the feds will have a hell of a time trying to convict him in LA.
