Wave bye-bye to those cheap gas prices — the why behind that

An OPEC+ oil production cut is coming right up, reports say.

This benefits two countries: Saudi Arabia, the leader of OPEC, and Russia, the +.

The Russian benefits are obvious: Increased pain on the West, along with, perhaps, letting China and a few other countries know they can't exploit its predicament too much. (Since Russia is also a net food exporter and Xi Jinping is blowing his top about Chinese food security, this has other angles, too.) Currently, Russian oil has been trading at as much as a 30 percent discount. So, tightening the market means the degree of discount will also drop.

The Saudis? Mohammad bin Salman, fresh off his international diplomatic immunity from being named prime minister, can keep Warmonger Joe Biden dancing like a fist-bumping yo-yo. This has added importance with the breakdown of a ceasefire in Yemen.

This is beyond the issue of simply addressing sagging gas prices.

The story above notes that purely domestic American issues had already brought a halt to declining gas prices in much of the country, though some stores here on the Red dropped a cent again in the last few days. It's ... interesting that Nevada (and I assume the story is overlooking Hawaii and Alaska) has the nation's most expensive gas outside of California.

And, although Inflationary Joe hasn't much reduced food inflation, even with the drop in gas prices, his chances of doing so decline even further with this. And, of course, Democratic Congressional political chances. (Hit the polls at right to offer your thoughts.) This will probably also further crimp the possibility of massive LNG exports to Europe this winter; my take on that is here.

Climate Change Joe, meanwhile, is talking about trying to limit American oil majors from exporting refined gasoline. Good luck with that one.

What about the Strategic Petroleum Reserve? Biden can still release more from it, but — and I did not know this before — due to various national and international legal obligations — it can't go below 250 million barrels. It's just short of 420 million now.

In other words, at Gas Pump Joe's rate of 1 million barrels a day during past releases, he's got a bit under six months' cushion left. Vladimir Putin will still be rolling dice at that time.

And, the real issue is not just the SPR, but the psychology behind it. As Biden's margins get narrower, getting the SPR closer to its 250 million barrel flatline, the market-influencing power of releases wanes.

Will oil hit $100/bbl, as this story speculates? I doubt it, at least not hitting there and staying there, but trading in the $90-100 range? You bet.

Meanwhile, a final thought on the first story. So-called "NOPEC" legislation to sue OPEC for market manipulation? Even if it DID pass Congress, it's nugatory. How would the US enforce it? Especially since it has opted out of so many international institutions. And, if it tried to, Saudi investments in US defense kit would dry up and blow away to Beijing.

In similar veins of stupidity, first referenced by me a week ago, is the EU's attempt to put a price cap on oil that originated in Russia, as a backdoor sanction. Here is how stupid that is.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve hits brick wall of no refinery reserve

Warmonger Joe decided to counter high crude prices due to NATO barking at Russia tied to the Russia-Ukraine war thereafter, by opening the Strategic Petroleum Reserve floodgates. Problem? As I knew myself, and Biden has yet to admit, US refinery capacity limitations mean much of that is going overseas.

Yep, we've drained the SPR by 20 percent and counting for that. Now the oil gurus note what I already note, that "oil is fungible." Yeah but strategic reserves are not. OTOH, per the second link, from Fox Biz, how many of you GOP wingnuts actually support the Goldilocks Three Bears on peace talks now? And, it is GOP wingnuts ranting that some of this oil is going to China.

Read more about the SPI, including previous sales or releases, at Wiki. (Oil from there has been sold before for deficit reduction; the GOP wingnuts who supported the Trump tax handouts to the rich that swelled the deficit won't tell you that.)

Strategery! Abounds with both duopoly parties, once again!

Broken record time – Bush to bitch to Saudis about oil again

Shrub’s repeated haranguing of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah over high oil prices get to the whole crux of “Is Bush that stupid” vs. “Is Bush that much a liar” question that we’ve seen in Texas for more than a decade, long before he ran for president.

In this case, is he so stupid to not believe in Peak Oil? Does he believe the Saudis actually can pump that more? Has he forgotten how much they have invested in American securities?

Or does he believe the American public will still readily believe a “blame the Arabs” spiel?

Meanwhile, the AP writer appears ignorant of KSA’s possible bumping up against Peak Oil:
Saudi Arabia has considerable additional production capacity. It’s pumping a little over 8.5 million barrels a day, compared with about 9.5 million barrels a day two years ago, and has acknowledged the ability to produce as much as 11 million barrels a day.

The “11 million” is a lie told for geopolitical reasons until proven otherwise. Second, nobody questions whether KSA has actually lost control over the whole situation.

Meanwhile, the GAO and some lawmakers that continuing to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at this time, even if a small physical factor in ramping up oil prices, may be a big psychological one.

Pander alert – Hillary on OPEC and WTO

So, now Hillary Clinton wants to break up OPEC. And to do it via the World Trade Organization.

Like Shakespeare, let’s count the ways that’s wrong.

First, it assumes we could do it.

Second, doing it via a World Trade Organization complaint assumes the WTO would
A. See a valid case;
B. Be able to do something;
C. Actually do something.

All of those aren’t likely, because …

OPEC is OPEC and NOT OPIC. We’re the ones importing oil, in other words, OPEC is in the export business.

Is OPEC charging a tariff? No. Putting trade restrictions on oil (or other products) coming into their countries? No. (Other than they might eventually crack to hard-line pressure and start denominating oil in euros.)

Third, she believes OPEC is actually a cartel in the sense of being a successful one. She knows better; she knows that OPEC members have cheated on pumping quotas for decades.

Fourth, why wasn’t the Slickster doing more to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve when crude was $10 a barrel? People laughed at Preznit Bush a couple of years ago, but $70/bbl oil in the reserve was cheaper than $120/bbl.

That said, it’s clear he and Tricky Dick Jr. Cheney, aka Uncle Fester, have known the gig was up on Peak Oil for some time, and refused to tell that to the public. THAT is why Bushie started topping off the SPR.

Which gets to…

Fifth, Hillary refusing to talk about Peak Oil.
