Shock me that my state senate Legiscritter, Drew Springer, since he mentioned it in early January, is carrying water for Strangeabbott's latest round of unconstitutionality, this time, with Drew filing a bill where the state would refuse to pay for the public school education of Ill Eagles. We'll send them to Sacred Heart instead, in Cooke County? It's not just unconstitutional in general, it specifically goes against a 1982 SCOTUS ruling, which Springer has discussed and rejected before. I'm sure that this is another attempt to get the new batch of allegedly precedent-supporting wingnuts on SCOTUS — Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Barrett — to overturn precedent, or else to dare Wallbuilder Joe to enforce the law.
That said, as Josephine Lee notes (after making Bernard Rapoport turn over in his grave by calling the Dallas Morning News "liberal"), stiffing Ill Eagle kids is part of stiffing public education in general.
Related? Abbott has a willing partner in crime in getting the Lege to blow yet more money on border issues. Sadly, as the Observer notes, El Paso Dem Mary Gonzalez, chairing the relevant state House subcommittee within the Budget Committee, basically became Abbott's lapdog. As Gus Bova notes there, half the problem is bad framing by Dems on this issue.
Besides, on putting up new hurdles, Wallbuilder Joe is Title 42 Trump under a new name.
